Burn not the flowers
A solo exhibition by Helen Joy Rogers
A solo exhibition by Helen Joy Rogers
In this exhibition, Helen brings together ceramics, painting and collage to explore memories, feelings, sensations and dreams.
Beginning with clay, shaping earthy materials into ceramic forms that become containers for painted and collaged images. The solidity of the clay is contrasted with images that move between the figurative and the abstract, reflecting the shifting nature of our inner worlds.
The work is influenced by the strange and fantastical qualities of medieval European art, where the everyday world was often transformed through imagination, symbolism and personal interpretation. Alchemical ideas also inform the work, particularly the notion of transformation through a slow and delicate process.
Rather than working towards a fixed theme, the artist allows intuition and chance to guide the making. Images emerge from the subconscious and are brought together through painting and collage, giving form to experiences that can otherwise be difficult to articulate.
Burn not the flowers is an exploration of the space between the physical and the psychological — and of the fragile process of giving form to what exists within us.
We look forward to seeing you!
